The song first appeared on Iglesias’s debut English-language album Enrique as a slow Latin styled ballad. It achieved success in many countries, such as Switzerland and Lettland where it topped the chart.

I love it!

I’ve heard about a hundred arguments for why this album shouldn’t be good, including attacks on the dated 80’s production style and cheesy song selection. All I have to say is WHATEVER! I LOVE this album! I’ve had it in my collection since it first came out and I think this one gets better over time. Sure, I hit a period of self-importance when I looked at this album with disdain and said, “Geez, I can’t believe I used to listen to that!” But that was my fault, not the album’s fault. To be fair , “Love Is A Contact Sport” is pretty damn corny. But in context of the album as a whole I think it works. And a lot of these songs just blow me away… “Just The Lonely Talking Again”, “Where You Are”, “You’re Still My Man”, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” are all beautiful, classic tracks. And Whitney’s version of the Isley Brothers “For The Love Of You” is tantalizing, beckoningly gorgeous. Her backing vocals on that track are sublime, and I love the arrangement. The closing track with Mom is very touching too. The hits are great but I’m sure we’ve all heard them a million times. For me it’s all about the album tracks, and these are fantastic. The original lp vinyl sounds great and I would recommend hearing it that way.

To just take the time out to listen to this CD after the release of her current CD ” I Look To You”, it almost makes you wanna cry. We never really miss something until it is totally and completely gone. I have to say that when Whitney was in her prime she was the actual best at her craft. Perfect melodies, lyrics and hooks that would compliment her voice that would just take you sailing in your mind with those notes, background fills and the powerful finishes that would captivate and make you appreciate what I felt was the best that the business had at that time. I love this CD from beginning to the end. No disrespect to what happenned to her careeras a result to drugs and cigarettes, but Whitney was responsible for Whitney and noone, but no one put a gun up to her head and said smoke drugs to damage your money maker. I find this to be real shame that this CD is off the hook and the new cd is a total and complete joke to real Whitney fan. Like I said earlier…..it makes you say …Dayum, just thinking about the past, because the present and future of Whitney is done. This was her at her best.

i miss the old whitney…

man, i sure do miss those days. her music and her voice used to be sooo great. i just love this album. this was her best album next to her debut. I absolutely love all the songs on the album. I grew up hearing Whitney’s music through my Dad. he enjoys her music but he doesn’t seem to talk about her these days. i’ve been listening to new her album which came out today and it’s so sad to hear that voice don’t sound good as it used to. it doesn’t sound so strong and feminine anymore. now she she sounds like some 60 year old man trying to make a comeback. it’s brings a tear to my eye that everything has gotten bad since the new millenium began. it’s like the people who used to be so popular and good have now deteriorated and lost their appeal. i would definately recommend this album if you’re looking for a good Whitney album. it’s all in here.

It’s Magic…

I thought i’d take a moment to go back in time and review an amazing album with Vocals that are pure an exhibits true talent. The ‘Whitney’ Album is comprised of beautiful Heart-melting love songs with passionate lyrics & melodies that bring tears to the eye. Whitney’s voice is so pure on this album and I believe it to be some of her best vocal to date. Songs like ‘Didn’t We Almost Have It All’, ‘You’re Still My Man’, ‘I Know Him So Well’ & ‘Love Will Save The Day’ Prove this. An although ‘One Moment In Time’ Is not on this record, It was still sung in the ‘Whitney-era’ 1988 to be exact. Lots o’folk like to say that “The Bodyguard” was Whitney’s peak vocally, I beg to differ. Those were some beautiful songs aswell but vocally the ‘Whitney’ album is the most moving. Her voice is so pure and rich on the ‘Whitney’ album, She’s well trained vocally prepared on every track, it’s magic!. Again, If you would love to experience Ms. Houston when her voice was crystal clear and makes you wonder, Scoop the 1987 release. Whitney has made History with this album. Pick this masterpiece up and be taken away by these beautiful 80’s love songs, You wont regret it.

i am very familiar with most of the songs on this album. some of them were hugely popular back then. this was the album that made people fall in love with whitney and her voice. it’s all filled with great memories and classics. for people who are beginning to like whitney and her music, you should start right here.

9. “Greatest Love of All”- another HUGE, memorable song. it was an 80s equivalent to Mariah Carey’s “Hero”. i remember the kids at my school sang this song one time. it may sound cheesy, but it is really inspirational. it’s about believing in yourself. too bad they don’t have these kind of songs anymore. 5/5

10. “Hold Me”-i grew up hearing this song but i never realized that this was whitney singing this. i love this duet with her and teddy pendergrass. it’s very romantic as roberta flack and peabo bryson’s “tonight i celebrate my love”. 5/5

Whitney Houston’s debut album was great because of Whitney’s killer chops but the songs on here are pretty average. Clive Davis thinks he is the best thing that ever existed but he likes to control his artists every move, from picking the songs and what their image should be. Whitney should’ve been given better material than these run-of-the-mill pop tunes. How Will I Know is still my favorite Whitney song but overall, Whitney was told what to do and that’s never a good thing.

THIS WAS THE VERY FIRST ALBUM I BOUGHT OF WHITNEY HOUSTON, BACK IN 1985 IT IS MOST LIKELY HER VERY BEST ALBUM EVER IN MY OPINION. IF YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT WANTING A WHITNEY HOUSTON RECORD ON CD THIS IS THE ONE TO HAVE, YOU’LL END UP LISTENING TO IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

Whitney came out BIG! “Whitney Houston” was best selling album in the U.S. of 1986. Three singles became No.1-Hits (still rare coming from one album). She received Grammy nomination for “Album of the Year”. And she won for the touching performance “Saving All My Love for You” (one of the best singles about “the other woman”). The singles were well picked as they show the amazing range Whitney had. She’s known for ballads but the interesting thing is songs like “How Will I Know” (cheesy 80s pop at its most fun) showed she could other things. My favorite song on the album is “You Give Good Love”. I just love the opening! It’s a R&B groove that gave mainstream audiences a first listen to her wonderful voice. I almost forgot “Greatest Love of All” (originally sung by the amazing George Benson). I don’t care if it seems cliché; I think the lyrics are empowering and still relevant. The production does age it (I’ve never heard the version with the piano rather than the keyboard) but it’s still a lovely song.

I have been anxious to listen to Whitney Houston’s debut album for a long time; I am so happy I finally got around to listening to it because I enjoyed it from start to finish. Here you will find the pop sound, the R&B, and a woman with a voice that is unmatched to this day. No, not even Patti LaBelle or Minnie Riperton compare. Whitney’s voice hadn’t completely matured on this album. You will find her vocals at their most mature on her biggest song to date, “I Will Always Love You.” But, she still sounds wonderful, almost angelic, on each and every song. The production has that 80s sound to it, and this album is going to sound dated to some, but the quality of this album is simply undeniable.

Houston’s first single is one of my all-time favorite songs by her and it is called “You Give Good Love.” Everything about that song is superb, especially Houston’s amazing delivery. To steal a line from that song, her voice is “never too much, will never be.” The people of the world obviously think that “The Greatest Love of All” is this album’s finest jewel because it is always sung at graduations, church services and commencements. “The Greatest Love of All” is lyrically the best song on this album because of the inspirational lines she sings just for the children. “Thinking About You” and “Take Good Care of My Heart” are good offerings, but they sort of fall short when comparing them to the rest of this album. “How Will I Know” was offered to Janet Jackson first, but she turned it down. Houston took the song and made it all her own; you would never know that this song was written for someone else. This song is kind of cheesy and very sappy, but it is definitely a guilty pleasure. It has that 80s “American Bandstand” feel to it. “Saving All My Love for You” is another one of her most definitive songs. It is an R&B classic.

When I say that this album is essential for music lovers, I mean every word. With this album, you will be taken on a journey to the mid 1980s and you will be enthralled from beginning to end. A classic. 4 shining stars.
