The story of the pop star who has been receiving threatening notes was really written in the late 1960’s. At that time Diana Ross was supposed to play the star singer and Steve McQueen the bodyguard. Something did not quite work out, so the story was not filmed at that time.

Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) had been a secret service agent, was in low spirit since he failed protecting Ronald Reagan when he was assassinated. When Frank got the job to be a bodyguard for Rachel Marron (Whitney Houston) he was determined to stay on top of things, and tightened the security more than Rachel’s staff  felt necessary.

Soon Rachel had to agree to these security rules, as it came clear that someone was after her life. And in time she and the bodyguard fell in love. This movie does not end in the way most romantic movies do. They go their sepered ways, she being this pop star and he got a job protecting another high class person.

“I Will Always Love You” was a title song in the movie and was a big hit that sold in more than 34 million copies worldwide and Whitney Houston won the Grammy award in 1994 for Record of the Year. She also won the award Best Female Pop Vocal Performance the same year.

The Bodyguard was a great hit !

• This film was originally proposed in the mid-’70s, starring Diana Ross and Steve McQueen, but was rejected as “too controversial”. The film concept was to be attempted again in the late 1970s, with Ryan O’Neal and Diana Ross cast as the leads. The project fell through after only a few months because of irreconcilable differences between O’Neal and Ross, who had been dating.

• Rachel’s mansion is the same mansion as the “horse’s head in the bed” mansion in The Godfather (1972).

• Rachel and Frank go and see Yojimbo (1961), which was released in the United States as “The Bodyguard”.

• Crew driver Bill Vitagliano was killed in an on-set accident when he was crushed between two colliding scissor-lifts, during the preparation for an underground parking garage scene.

• Lawrence Kasdan’s first ever screenplay.

• The proposal for this film was rejected 67 times.

• The camera operator riding the dolly rail during the airplane scene where the camera revolves around actors Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston fell off when the centripetal force surprised him while shooting the scene. The cameraman climbed back onto the rigging during filming to retain operation, finishing the scene, which was kept in the movie.

• The film had to undergo some hasty re-cutting when test audiences jeered Whitney Houston’s performance.

• At the fictional Academy Awards ceremony, the Best Sound Oscar goes to Mychal Smith and Kay Colvin (who were in reality the Boom Operator and Cable Person respectively), the Best Song winner is written by Nancy Garber (who was really the film’s Art Department Researcher) and one of the fictional nominated songwriters was Leslie Moraes (who was really the film’s Assistant Location Manager).

• Kevin Costner said that he based his portrayal of Frank Farmer on actor Steve McQueen. He even went as far as to get McQueen’s trademark haircut for the role.

• The brand of whiskey being drank throughout the film is Springbank from Campbeltown in Scotland, where the director was on holiday prior to making the film.

• Crew or equipment visible: At Frank’s cabin, when Frank walks Rachel up to her room, there is a shadow of a microphone/camera on the left-hand wall.

• Continuity: When Rachel is watching Frank watch her film clip, Frank is leaning forward from Rachel’s view, but when it cuts to a close shot of Frank he is leaning back in the chair and then begins to lean forward.

• Continuity: When Delaney hires Frank there’s a sprinkler rotating in the background. In the next shot it’s gone and so is the hose.

• Crew or equipment visible: Towards the end of the fight in Frank’s kitchen, a crewmember is reflected in the cupboard door when Tony pulls the knife out of the holder.

• Revealing mistakes: In the scene where Rachel is handling the katana at Frank’s place, it is clear from the regular scalloped pattern (“hamon”) on the blade that it is not a real katana, but a cheap ornamental replica which would be blunt. Real katanas have an irregular hamon.

Whitney was 29 when we sat down for this interview to promote the film,The Bodyguard. She was sweet and a little late to the interview I recall. She was really on a roll at this point. One of the biggest music stars in the world. The pressure was great…In 2008 she’s 44 we keep hearing she’s on the way back. I hope so..what a talent! The price of fame and fortune can be very high and not everyone can deal with it Whitney was one of the purest voices ever when she was at her prime.
